What is adhd?

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) isn't just a kid's condition — about 4% of US adults have it. Adult ADHD often presents as difficulty focusing, procrastination, disorganization, impulsivity, and time blindness.

Treatment is highly effective. Stimulants (methylphenidate, amphetamines) work for the majority; non-stimulants are available for those who can't or don't want stimulants.

Important: stimulants are controlled substances with prescribing restrictions. After the COVID-era flexibility, the DEA is moving toward requiring at least one in-person visit. Telehealth platforms vary on what they can prescribe.

Do I have adhd? Common signs

If most of these describe what you're experiencing, telehealth may be a good next step:

Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks Easily distracted Forgetfulness in daily activities Difficulty organizing tasks and time Procrastination, especially on uninteresting tasks Trouble finishing what you start Hyperfocus on engaging activities Impulsive decisions, blurting in conversations Restlessness, fidgeting Time blindness — underestimating how long things take Emotional dysregulation Lifelong pattern — symptoms predate adulthood

What causes it

Genetics (highly heritable), prenatal exposures, brain differences in dopamine/norepinephrine pathways. Not caused by parenting, screens, or sugar.

Is it contagious?

No.

The classic complaint isn't 'can't focus on anything' — it's 'can focus intensely on what's interesting but completely lose hours of working time on boring tasks.'

Can it be treated online?

Adult ADHD evaluation requires careful history, often including childhood patterns. Telehealth can do initial evaluation and non-stimulant prescribing. Stimulant prescribing for new patients often requires at least one in-person visit due to DEA rules — check with your clinician about current requirements.

How adhd is treated

Stimulants (controlled substances): methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin), amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse). 70–80% response rate. Non-stimulants: atomoxetine (Strattera), bupropion (Wellbutrin), guanfacine. Behavioral strategies and ADHD coaching add value. Some patients use stimulants only on demanding days.

Self-care while you wait

When to skip telehealth and seek emergency care Severe agitation, chest pain, or psychosis on stimulants — stop and seek care. Significant weight loss on long-term stimulants needs evaluation.

How long does it last?

Chronic. Many people benefit from lifelong treatment; some maintain function with strategies alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Adderall online?

Variable — DEA rules require at least one in-person visit for new prescriptions of Schedule II controlled substances in most cases. Some clinicians can prescribe non-stimulants via telehealth.

Is ADHD over-diagnosed?

Mixed evidence. Adult ADHD is also widely under-diagnosed — many people went through life without diagnosis. Careful clinical evaluation is what matters.

Will stimulants make me high?

No — at therapeutic doses, they normalize attention without euphoria. Misuse (snorting, very high doses) is risky.

What about non-stimulant options?

Atomoxetine and bupropion are effective for many, take 4–6 weeks to work, no DEA restrictions. Reasonable starting points.

Can I treat ADHD without medication?

Some people manage with behavioral strategies, exercise, sleep optimization, and ADHD coaching. Medication is most effective for moderate-severe symptoms.
