What is bug bites?

Bug bites — mosquitoes, fleas, gnats, midges, ticks — cause localized allergic reactions: red itchy bumps. Most resolve on their own. Some carry disease risk (ticks: Lyme; mosquitoes: West Nile etc.).

Severe allergic reactions, infected bites, or signs of disease transmission warrant evaluation.

What causes it

Direct skin contact with biting insect. Reaction is allergic to insect saliva.

Is it contagious?

No directly — but some insects transmit infections (Lyme, West Nile, malaria, dengue, Zika).

The bullseye rash from tick bites is iconic — but only about 70% of Lyme cases have it. Tick bite with any unusual rash warrants attention.

Can it be treated online?

Routine bug bites are well-suited to telehealth. Tick bites with concern for Lyme, severe allergic reactions, infected bites, suspected disseminated infection — need in-person evaluation.

How bug bites is treated

Topical hydrocortisone for itch. Oral antihistamines for multiple bites or itch. Antibiotics for infected bites or as Lyme prophylaxis after tick bite. Tick removal: fine-tipped tweezers, grasp at skin level, pull straight up. Save the tick for ID if Lyme concern.

Self-care while you wait

When to skip telehealth and seek emergency care Anaphylaxis (difficulty breathing, throat tightness, dizziness, widespread hives), spider bite with severe pain/spreading necrosis, signs of Lyme (fever, bullseye rash, joint pain), unusual neurologic symptoms — emergency.

How long does it last?

Most bites resolve in days. Some reactions take 1–2 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prevent tick attachment?

DEET-based repellent, permethrin on clothes (long-lasting), tuck pants in socks, check skin after outdoor activity.

Do I need antibiotics after a tick bite?

Sometimes — doxycycline 200mg single dose within 72 hours of removal reduces Lyme risk in endemic areas. Discuss with clinician.

How long do I have to remove a tick?

Lyme transmission usually requires 36+ hours attached. Remove ASAP.

Will calamine lotion work?

Helps with itch. Hydrocortisone cream often stronger.

Are mosquito bites dangerous?

Usually no in US. West Nile rare but possible. Worldwide — malaria, dengue, Zika more concerning.
